“A single Bryde’s Whale swam into Fish Hoek Bay from Simonstown side and headed across the bay towards Clovelly.

The hooked dorsal fin far back was diagnostic. This is the first time for many years that I’ve seen one this far into Fish Hoek Bay”.

Denise writes:

“Here is a pic of the whales we spotted on Saturday 8th from Chapman's Peak
Hoerikwaggo path. This whale was on his own. There was also a huge pod of
about 8 whales close by, but my camera just shows them as blimps in the
water, although they were very clear from the path looking down on them -
what a wonderful sighting we had!  And they were very vocal - most exciting!”

Glen reports: “three Southern Rights spent this morning up close to the Navy frigate SAS Mendi. They would move off into the middle of the harbour then all come back together alongside the ship. This would follow much splashing with tails and flukes waving  about. One of the whales decided to make the harbour entrance his base for nearly and hour. If a boat passed the harbour entrance the whale would turn towards the sound  and then return to face back into the harbour. The fishing trawler Basani entered port at 0900 for dry docking and even this interRuption did not disturb their antics. All three left in the late afternoon.

You may ask how do I have time to watch all these whales and their antics. Well my office is right on the quay overlooking the harbour and the harbour entrance. The whales can be rather distracting as they come and go but always a pleasure to watch -what a job!!”
