WHALE LOG 2014

WHALE CENTRAL

WHOISWHO

HISTORICAL

The proximity of False Bay West shore to the Cape Town’s city centre makes whale and dolphin watching a very attractive “Green” option for either boat or land-based

watching.  Thanks to the geography of this area, there are many elevated positions from which to watch whales and dolphins at play, the train and restaurants included.

False Bay

The boat came across a SRW and her spanking new calf! Read on….

“This afternoon we witnessed one of nature’s most amazingly beautiful events. A Southern Right whale calf taking its first breath! Whilst enjoying a social group of whales off Strandfontein, a whale breached near St. James & we immediately proceeded at full speed in that direction. En-route, I saw some strange splashing inshore which suddenly turned red. With all the red tide in False Bay at present, I didn’t take too much notice of it & we continued. A few minutes later I noticed a rather odd grey coloured mass on top of a pitch black whale & decided to investigate. To our absolute amazement a mother was raising the floppy body of its new born calf to the surface & a short while later, with a little spluttering, it took its first breath. Within minutes it tried to propel itself through the water, without great success though, but it soon got the knack of it and before long it was swimming quite confidently. We wish it a long, healthy & safe life”.

“We came across a Humpback whale yesterday with some rather odd scarring on its peduncle (tail stock). It could possibly be from a previous rope entanglement or even an attack by an Orca - which is not uncommon. We’ve circulated the picture to a network of scientist & will let you know what their opinions are”.

PS:  Dave says “An initial thought is a probable predator attack (shark or Orca). I guess we'll never be certain, but rope cuts have been ruled out”.

“A rare treat at this time of the year with our pelagic trip today. After a moody sunrise we saw a Bryde’s whale and two Humpback whales as we headed out of False Bay. On anchor we were surrounded by pelagic birdlife; three species of albatross (shy, black brow and atlantic yellow nose), giant petrels, sub antarctic skuas, white chin petrels and sooty shearwaters. A bird lover’s paradise and a sunny day at sea kept us smiling as we headed to Seal Island for the afternoon”.

Says Monique: “On this particular day in early January we cruised to Cape Point in beautiful sea conditions and upon arrival we found that The Point was teeming with life. The surface of the ocean was alive with bait fish and sea birds such as Corey’s and Sooty shearwaters, Sabine’s Gulls and Cape Gannets were working the fish all around us. We even spotted the occasional longfin and skipjack tuna feeding on the surface too. In the distance Chris spotted the birds working in a very small and focused area so we raced on to find out what was happening. As we were approaching we saw a Minke whale make two big lunges through the bait ball. Just like that the action was abruptly ended as the whale demolished the entire bait ball”.
