Sean Steyn smses saying “there is a large SRW directly in front of The Spur!”. Lorraine e mails shortly after her swim to say “Rose, Dot, Daphne and I were watching the whales from the beach. They moved towards Clovelly and one breached very close to the railway station.  They then moved close to the shore towards the Catwalk and by the time I got home they were virtually under the balcony.  I took a few snaps (will send - not very graphic but to prove the point) and watched them closely - definitely a mother with a young whale - all black but no callosities.  The young one did a few breaches and tried some more as they rounded the Sunnycove corner (9am)”.

Note: Lorraine spotted an enormous shark earlier that morning and later said “when I watched the shark from the house the shark was close to shore in the Main Swimming Area.

On the Sunday before I actually watched the shark passing our house, following closely behind the Taxi boat, with the fin well out of the water. The boat was close to the Catwalk & moving very slowly and was obviously aware of the shark's presence”.

Historical Note –

The Connection To Victoria Falls: Cecil John Rhodes late of 246 Main Road Muizenberg (Rhodes’ Cottage) directed that the bridge be built so that train passengers could experience the spray when crossing in season. Construction took 14 months. The bridge was opened by Professor George Darwin son of Charles Darwin.

The Victoria Falls Bridge celebrates its 106th birthday today.

Says Sallianne “It breached four times before

returning to its young newly born? Having lived on the mountainside

in Fish Hoek for ten years now this is the first time we have witnessed a whale

breach so close to shore. My daughter confirmed it was a young baby with

the adult SRW that we saw as a friend of hers had been paddling during the

period that the whale was in the bay”.

and dolphins

Initially there was no description of the species and they appeared to be Humpbacks.

However Mrs Nan Rice of the Disentanglement Network pointed out that they were probably Bryde Whales as they feed on the same fish as the dolphins.

Note: A shark was spotted off the Sailing Club at 07h30 and the siren sounded.
